EU Approves 19th Sanctions Package Banning Russian LNG Imports
The European Union has ratified its 19th round of sanctions against Russia, targeting Moscow's energy sector with a ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. The agreement, finalized after Slovakia withdrew its objections, includes a phased implementation: short-term LNG contracts will terminate within six months, while long-term contracts cease by January 2027—a year ahead of the initial timeline.
Sanctions now extend to trade and travel restrictions, with Brussels asserting measurable economic impact on Russia. Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico secured written assurances from the European Commission regarding energy price stability and climate policy exemptions for domestic industries before lifting his blockade.
